History of TV:

TV is, by and large, the most widely prevalent electronic medium in the world today. It covers a wide variety of programming from drama to comedy to live broadcasts too! The first TV sets were not as user-friendly as they are today but nevertheless marked a revolution in people’s viewing habits with their increased access to content of all sorts for a relatively small price and with little effort on their part. Let’s find out more about this technology. The first ever TV sets were presented at the 1933 Chicago World Fair. At a price of $400, they were not too popular and so remained a mere curiosity for most people. Several decades later, in 1946, the first regular commercial broadcast began in New York City and was broadcast by WRGB. In 1947 the BBC began experimental broadcasts with regular viewing beginning in 1954. In Canada, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) became the national TV broadcaster in 1952.

The first regular public broadcasting service was established in 1936 by the BBC but commercial broadcasting began only in 1946. In some countries, especially those where television is a recent invention and where it has not yet become widespread, television channels like Asia Television or the Korean Broadcasting System are available for free to air on satellite services such as Eutelsat 28A. Some countries operating their own satellite systems also broadcast their own television channels. These include France Télévision from France and Egyptian TV from Egypt. In most countries however, television is under the control of one or more public service broadcasters whose output is largely funded through taxation, licence fees or advertising. In the United Kingdom, for example, the BBC provides eleven non-commercial channels in the UK free of charge to televise popular shows such as EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing and Doctor Who.TV technology:

A TV set is essentially a portable display device that incorporates an image viewing screen and a tuner that allows you to decode specific signals broadcast from a television transmission tower, which may then be viewed on your TV. The technology used also allows you to record some programmes for later viewing or permanently store them onto other storage devices. Apart from the image viewing screen, all TV sets have an antenna that picks up signals from a transmitter and switches them onto the screen. In most cases, this is as simple as an L-shaped cylindrical piece of metal with a wire loop at one end and this picks up information from the satellite or terrestrial towers. The television receiver is used to receive the signal and then convert it into usable electrical energy, which is led through a cable in order to be viewed on your TV. The receiver is connected to the image viewing screen, usually with a wire cable of some sort. This is the most simple form of TV programming; however, the number of channels that can be picked up in this manner varies from one to several tens. The same signal is received by the antenna in order to see if it contains programming you want to view. If so, then you switch it on and select your desired channel using a remote control unit. There are many more advanced technological advances available but these are beyond the scope of this article.
